A program for everyone

One to One Mentoring is what we do.  It's ALL we do.  And we've been doing it since 1904.

Bigs in BlueSM:

a one-to-one youth mentoring program that connects youth with police in communities throughout our nation, building strong, trusting, lasting relationships. These relationships can help build stronger bonds between law enforcement and the families they serve. Each officer is required to commit to a minimum of one year in the program and meet with their Little for at least four hours per month. Officers are vetted and trained just like all our civilian volunteer mentors.

Big Buddies Program at UVM:

BBBS of Vermont and the University of Vermont's student run Big Buddies student club have joined forces to provide exciting opportunities for college students to mentor local elementary school students in Burlington. Volunteer "Bigs" meet with their "Littles" at school once a week to play games, participate in sports, work on homework, you name it!

Beyond School Walls Workplace Mentoring:

Middle-High School Students:

This Big Brothers Big Sisters nationwide mentoring program allows companies to give back to their community by hosting children from area schools in real-life work and higher education environments for an average of 15 sessions a year.  Big Brothers Big Sisters facilitates partnerships among companies, colleges and local middle and high schools by facilitating recruitment, interviewing/screening of all participants, facilitating relationship development and providing staff for oversight. Volunteer “Bigs” meet twice a month for 1.5 hours with their mentees (“Littles”) to build personal relationships while discussing topics that aid children in personal and leadership development. The Bigs help their Littles create a vision for a positive future.

Youth who have participated in “Beyond School Walls” have reported improvement in school behavior, overall grades, self-esteem, communication skills and their desire to learn new things. These future adults joining the workforce of Vermont are introduced to an array of opportunities that will expose them to real-work experiences and allow them to develop a special friendship with a positive, caring role model.

Elementary Students:

This national BBBS program model connects our Littles to the workplace setting. Bigs from local businesses are matched with Littles in 1st-4th grades. One day every other week, Littles spend one hour with their Bigs, one-to-one at their place of business. The match starts out with snack and then spends time playing games, doing homework together, visiting the Bigs' work space, playing outside, doing crafts, and more!

Big Brothers Big Sisters one-to-one mentoring already makes a difference in childrens' lives. In Beyond School Walls, Littles also see the value of their education first hand by being immersed in work culture.

If your company is based in Vermont, has at least 5 employees interested in becoming Bigs, and you would like to learn more about Beyond School Walls and how you too can get involved, contact our Executive Director Kimberley Diemond for more information!
